How to Take Care of Bags and Shoes
Here are a few things to consider in making sure that your bags and shoes are in good condition always:
Do not dry clean bags or shoes with plastic beads on them. Dry cleaning melts plastic.
To remove dry stains on fabric shoes and bags, use a dry brush to sweep away residue. Gently dab a damp fabric of the same color as the bag or shoe on the stain; sprinkle baking soda. Once dry, brush again. Repeat if necessary but don't use too much baking soda.
On oily stains, immediately dab baking soda. Let it sit until the stain is absorbed. Pat the area dry with fabric of the same color as the bag or shoe. Do not rub. If the stain remains, dab soda water and baking soda on it. Press a dry fabric cloth of the same color on the area until wetness is absorbed.
Shoes and bags made of suede or pile fabric (velvet, terry cloth, boucle, tweed) can be cleaned with an old, dry toothbrush. Do not try to remove stains while wet. Do not trim the fabric as this will ruin the item.
Never soak a bag or a pair of shoes to remove stains. Some bags and shoes are constructed with adhesives that will dissolve with water. Your bags and shoes will become yellowish and rusty-looking.
Do not store shoes and bags with metal in sealed or tightly knotted plastic bags. This allows oxidation; the metal may stain the fabric.
Store shoes and bags made of delicate material in smooth fabric bags. Beaded bags should also be kept inside cloth bags to prevent snagging.
Use shoe trees to keep the shape of your shoes, even the strappy ones. If you have no shoe trees, use crumpled wrapping paper or brown paper. Do not use newspaper or colored paper as it might bleed into the insoles.
It would help if you have a walk-in closet with a built-in shoe rack, which can be slanted for an easier view of the contents. The bags can be hanged on wooden pegs which will make it easier to choose one when you are dressed and ready to go.
Organizing our personal things takes patience and creativity, and part of it is making sure that our bags and shoes are in very good condition and well-taken cared of. It will benefit us in the long run and will save us a lot of money if we can lengthen the life span of our personal things.
